From December to March, I worked as an intern for Red Bird Studios, where they were creating an animated video for a song called Jump on Board, Enjoy the Ride, which was made by Rina Fu.

I was given the task of designing concepts for the background art.

Four panels of fully rendered concepts for night sky designs. Which include colourful celestial clouds, asteroid showers, bubbles, lights, the moon and other dream like objects.

The animation video follows a woman who falls asleep while looking at photos of her and her friend at the beach. She enters into a dream, where she finds herself in dazzling ocean at night. There she meets her friend and they go on an adventure, riding waves on a boat, sailing through the stars and even swimming with fishes and whales.

A lot of the scene takes place at night, and so my focus was to make the night sky as beautiful as I could. From colourful celestial clouds, to continous asteroid showers. To make it even more dream like, I even added bubbles floating through the nightsky.

I also had a chance to design the protagonist's room, a simple place filled with some of my signature detailing. I even added a few references to some of Rina Fu's other work, and since she's also a scientist, you can find a few little easter eggs related to her field and books.

A concept piece from the perspective of someone looking at a photograph of themself and a friend at the beach. In the background is the rest of their room, shrouded in the dark with a few glowing stars on the wall.
A rough concept piece that's looking up at the sky from an ocean, where clouds and stars dominate the scene.

This project was really fun to work on, but unfortunetly, I don't think Red Bird will continue to work on this video. So while we're unlikely to see the music video anytime soon, I will gladly share some of the work I created for it.

If you enjoy some of my concepts, and are looking for a freelance background artist, feel free to contact me, and I'll be happy to join on to your project. Otherwise, thanks for reading, and stay tuned for future posts.
